What should your diet be like if your slowly becoming a diabetic?

I’m becoming diabetic. It’s not real bad yet, but If I dont eat for 4 hrs or more, I get all the symptoms of a diabetic. It runs in my family, so it was only a matter of time. I want to loose weight, I am excersing, but I want to know a good diet, to eat properly while loosing weight and not feeling all shakey, sweaty and low energy. Can anyone help?

Chosen Answer:

I would like to second the low carb answer. I was 255 with a lean body mass of 135 at 5′ 11″ with high glucose, tryglicerides and cholesterol. It was a prediabetic condition. Two years later all my blood levels are normal. I weigh 239 with a lean body mass of 202. That is about 16% bodyfat. I did a cross between Atkins and Protein Power (low carb diets). I did nothing but weight lifting for exercise until about 6 months ago. Now I also do high intensity interval training. I also do just a little cardio once a week for my heart and lungs. A year ago a started drinking whey protein shakes. Other then that all I take is a multivitimin. I drink a gallon of water a day too.

One more thing, the aspartame thing is a myth. I drink it in diet soda all the time.

    Avoid sugary foods, of course.
Losing weight will help a lot too.
Talk to your doctor for specific diet recommendations. People on here can give you general good advice, but your doctor can tweak your diet according to your individual needs.

My sis is a registered dietitian, and my mom just lost weight using a diabetic diet! The key to what you said was YOU ARE NOT YET A DIABETIC! It’s NOT a matter of time! The only sure things are death & taxes! Remember that! Try limiting the “white” food, like sugar and flour. Don’t forget the fructose is sugar in fruit! Lots of veggies and excercise WILL curb that diabetic curse.
